Zend Framework: Zend_Navigation - Breadcrumbs

by Administrator on Monday, 19th of March 2012 11:06:08 PM

Zend Framework is a powerful and resourceful framework that I apply in most of the projects that our company handles. It has many components that are useful and are easy to be deployed. However, its online documentation can sometimes be incomplete and developers reading them could be misguided. Fortunately, one of the better source of guidance on Zend Framework has to be Zendcasts.com. The man behind this website is Jon Lebonsold and his podcasts are always something that we would look forward to - Simple and direct.

Zend_Navigation is a key component that I often use and while this component was also featured and explained in Zendcasts.com, I observed that when the navigation structure is stored in the form of XML, the breadcrumb(s) would be best rendered when the controller and action of the navigation is marked up as such:

<label>Home</label> <controller>index</controller> <action>index</action>

While the podcast demonstrated using the exact URI, it does not (at least in my experience), work well with additional parameters behind your URI.

<label>Home</label> <uri>/</uri>

For instances, if the URI is http://www.erconsult.org/?&id=123, the breadcrumb will not appear because it does not have a matching URI entry in the navigation.xml file. If you have a different approach or suggestions, feel free to email to me.

Please take note that this post is aimed to provide an alternative to the deployment of Zend_Navigation component as a breadcrumb andnavigation menu. It has no intention to criticize the works of others.
